The Raven's Ball Murder Mystery

The Study

The dim light in Poe’s study flickers as the candle atop his desk burns slowly. The room is filled with shelves of books, their spines worn from years of use. The air is thick with the smell of old paper. As you look around, something catches your eye on Poe’s desk—a small dagger pinned to a note, with a copy of a poem entitled "The Magpie" by Amelia Cyrano. Scribbled across the page in a spattered ink are the words: "Remember this?! Lexington, KY November 1844. You stole success from me, and now I'm going to break your heart like you broke mine."

You notice something else—multiple crumpled pieces of paper in the nearby wastebasket. Unfolding and laying them out, you recognize there are six monthly prescriptions for "creosote" written by Doctor Blackwell intended for Virginia, likely to treat the tuberculosis. You think back to your college days and remember that creosote is harmless if used topically, but poisonous if ingested.

As the flickering light of the candle casts shadows across the room, you begin to suspect that more than one person has reason to be involved in this mystery. It might be a good idea to find out what Elmira knows. You look into your notes and Peter said that Elmira always carries a hand fan with her.
