The Mystery Solved

Poe Confesses

With all the clues in hand, the detectives gather their thoughts. The musty odor of the hemlock in Virginia’s glass, the broken stalk found in the cemetery, and Poe’s movements throughout the night reveal the truth: Edgar Allan Poe poisoned his wife, Virginia, with hemlock, believing he was sparing her from the slow, painful death of tuberculosis.

You walk up to Poe with the hemlock in the folded piece of paper and he sways, having had too much to drink.

"Ah, detectives... you’ve uncovered the truth, haven’t you? Yes, it was I who poisoned her—my dear Virginia. But I swear to you, it was not murder born of malice. It was an act of mercy, of love, a desperate attempt to spare her from the torment of that wretched disease. I’ve seen it before, you know. Tuberculosis took my mother, breath by breath. Watching Virginia waste away, knowing the agony that awaited her, I couldn’t bear it."

Poe pauses, his voice trembling with emotion, as his eyes glaze over with tears.

"She was so fragile, so innocent, and yet the sickness was relentless, tearing her apart. I couldn’t watch it any longer. So, in the stillness of the night, I went to the cemetery, to the grave of my mother. It was there that I found the hemlock—a poison that would free Virginia from her pain, just as I had wished to free my mother all those years ago."

He clenches his fists, as if trying to hold onto his crumbling sense of reason.

"I slipped it into her drink...I couldn’t endure another death like my mother’s. So, I took her life before the disease could. I loved her—God, how I loved her—but I couldn’t let her suffer any longer."

He falls silent, his head bowed in defeat, waiting for the inevitable judgment.

The partiers continue celebrating. Unaware of the heinous deed that has occurred. You do what must be done and you have found justice for Virginia Poe.

The case is closed.
