The Greenhouse

You finally meet Doctor Blackwell, her face pale and hands trembling slightly. She greets you with red eyes and grief.

You ask about her whereabouts and what she knows.

"I... I don't know what to say. I was here to treat Virginia for tuberculosis and tend to her in case she needed anything. I'm her doctor."

You press Dr. Blackwell, telling her that you found her letter and you know they argued.

Elizabeth Blackwell takes in a shuddering breath and says "I loved Virginia, I’ll admit that. Yes, she rejected me, but I’d never harm her," she says softly. "A love like ours... or I guess like mine... wouldn't have lasted very long out here so I asked her to run away with me. She said no. Firmly. I felt betrayed. I was angry and hurt and in that moment I did want her to know how I felt. I thought we'd had something different and... special. But, I fled to the cemetery, just to let it out and clear my head. On my way there, I ran into Poe as he was walking toward the house. We had a short chat and he said he was visiting his mother’s grave, as he often does, and he worried about Virginia's worsening tuberculosis. I told him that as long as she continued to use the creosote, she will eventually improve. I feel so much guilt for how wrong I was."

Blackwell adds one more unsettling detail.

"When I got to the cemetery, I must have been crying so intensely that I became lightheaded and dizzy. I had to leave and compose myself again."
